Blurb

Collars and Cuffs: Book Five

The man who pimped Jeff may be in prison, but Jeff is still living the nightmare, selling himself to men and relying on pills to manage. Then he meets Scott, a young American man who could easily have been where Jeff is now. Scott’s friends extend a helping hand to Jeff, and he grabs it.

Leo and Thomas bring Jeff to stay with Dom Damian Barnett until they can find him someplace more long-term. Still grieving from losing his sub to cancer two years before, Damian agrees to help. But when he glimpses the extent of the damage, Damian wants to do more than offer his guestroom. Jeff is not a submissive, but Damian can see he desperately needs structure in his life. It’s up to Damian to find an answer.

He never expects that what he discovers will change both their lives.

Review

This book is part of the Collars & Cuffs series, which evolve around a BDSM club of that name. Yes, I meant evolve and not revolve because, although the books of the series have the club in common, it's not always a focal point. The books tell the stories of people who have some kind of connection with the club, and their lives weave together from book to book, creating a rich tapestry.

In this book, Damien, a strong and powerful Dom is in mourning for his sub and life partner, who died two years ago. Damien's all but given up on the club and any meaningful sex, and isn't looking for a new sub or a new partner.

Jeff is a teenager who spent years being abused by a criminal who used him in every way possible, from a drug mule to a rent boy. He also gets him hooked on drugs to help him suffer the greater excesses put on him during the 'rental sessions'.

When Jeff is 'saved' by the sub of one of Damian's friends Damian agrees to take him in and keep him safe for a few days until they found him somewhere permanent.

The trouble starts right at the get go. Jeff is hurt and confused. For one thing he doesn't really know what's happening to him, and he hasn't actually said he wants it. He has some pretty twisted ideas of himself, his worth and what others want of him.

Both of them struggle to find their roles and Jeff constantly kicks off against Damien's rules and sometimes heavy handed approach. There were times when it felt as if Damien was more Jeff's father than lover, but those were rare. Jeff was in desperate need of rules and discipline, and eventually comes to thrive on them.

It's a difficult journey though. For a time it feels as if they take one step forward then two back. Jeff confessing the true horrors of his past to Damien was a real breakthrough. Jeff had been worrying that if Damien knew all the things he's been forced to do and had forced on him, Damien would be disgusted and wouldn't want him anymore. The huge relief that comes when he realizes Damien isn't going to throw him back in the gutter is the start of his true healing.

There are some very sweet moments, not just between Damian and Jeff, but with their fellow Doms and subs. The proposal at the end had me sniffing and the budding relationship between Jeff and Peter is touching.

It's hard to find anything really bad to say because the book is well written and the story is strong and compelling. The relationships feel natural and the emotions are genuine. If there is one flaw, it's the whole discipline thing. It's probably more about me and my anarchistic bent, but there were times when I just wanted Jeff to say 'fuck you' and walk out.

That's not to say I don't accept those times were necessary.

Short version - I loved this book
Long version - I really, really loved this book

K C Wells

Born and raised in the north-west of England, K.C.Wells always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way.
K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, where the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings - writing about men in love was even hotter...

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career.
